The transition from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice will save the Italian military 29 million euros

The Italian Ministry of Defense announced the replacement of proprietary software to open-source. Basically, we are talking about using LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office. According to the military, such a move will help them save about 29 million euros. In addition, the army will be approved by the new format of documents ODF (Open Document Format).

“Taking into account the expiration of the licenses for Microsoft Office, we will have more than 75,000 users of Libre Office by 2017 and 25,000 in addition by 2020,” said General Camillo Sileo. The project for switching to open-source software has already begun to be implemented, and 5,000 workstations have been transferred to LibreOffice.

In order for the transition to be successful, the military conducts special courses on the conversion of operators to the use of new software. The project should be implemented before the end of this year.

“We started with a risk assessment, negotiations with employees and operator training. We are currently working with LibreOffice user training courses, ”the general said.

Let me remind you that now government agencies and the military of many European countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, and France, are switching (or have already switched) to free software.

As for Russia, the other day, the Minister of Communications of the Russian Federation called for “cleaning out” Western software standards in regulatory acts, bearing in mind the format of documents and fonts. Earlier it was also reported about the intention of a number of organizations to develop an instant messenger for civil servants, but as it turned out, there is no money for it yet .
