The key feature of each data center is the material from which it is built. This material can be the usual construction of metal and concrete or metal modular blocks, inside which the data center equipment is located. Most of them resemble ordinary storage facilities, but some are simply works of art. The main architect of the project appears most likely as an artist, turning his creative idea into a fascinating reality.

The Data Tower project is a data center that is shaped like a skyscraper and is considered energy efficient.
')

Italian architects Valeria Mercury and Marco Merletti set themselves an important task, deciding to build a data center in the shape of a skyscraper. This project was presented at the annual competition, in which they took third place. The project proposes the removal of an environmentally sustainable data center - a skyscraper located in Iceland. This country has already managed to become famous for renewable geothermal energy sources. Excellent opportunities for
free cooling - cooling systems. The main idea is to efficiently use all available resources, namely, the vertical structure of the DC with the help of the natural circulation of cold air flows through the data center. Also proposed is a complete power supply of infrastructure from the geothermal energy sources of Iceland. These sources have been working for the benefit of mankind for years.
Data Tawer Specification

Designers have designed a data center in the form of a cylinder; it resembles a chimney (only the cold air from the DC is used as smoke). In the middle of the cylindrical data center there are servers, motherboards are in the form of a cylinder and not a standard layout, which contributes to effective cooling. It is also planned to use all the excess heat energy and, with the help of heat recovery, direct it to the greenhouses, which are located at the base of the data center. In order to realize this project, it is planned to use 24 independent columns that form the building exoskeleton. The server hardware will be located in the middle of the modular units, which will accommodate from 4 to 8 standard server racks. Modular units will make movable, which will give the opportunity to quickly upgrade and make operational repairs. This building will reach 300 m in height, which corresponds to 65 floors and the ability to accommodate up to 400 tis. servers. Engineers did not carry out any technical calculations to find out what the coefficient of PUE will be. But considering the placement of equipment, the use of the function of free cooling and heat recovery, as well as free electricity from a geothermal source of energy in Iceland, this will make it possible to bring the PUE value closer to the long-awaited “1”. And so the new data center becomes even more energy efficient and ecological.
The project resembles an automated plan for the construction of vertical garages. And the cooling system is used in the Apple Mac Pro workstation of the new sample.
