On October 14, 2015, Tesla released an update for automotive software with the new Autopilot features for US users, and on October 24, it received permission to update car firmware in all countries of the world except Japan. The upgrade is available for cars released after September 2014. In autopilot mode, the program uses data from the camera and radar in front of the car, as well as from the GPS module and 12 ultrasonic sensors along the body perimeter, supports the movement of the car along its lane, avoids obstacles, accelerates and slows down if necessary.
The ability to evade obstacles came at the right time when testing Autopilot on Moscow highways. The first test in Moscow was carried out by the Moscow Tesla Fans Club. ')
The video above shows how the Tesla autopilot dodges a taxi car that undercuts an electric car. He behaved quite correctly: he slowed down a bit and shifted to the next row in order to skip the hurrying taxi driver. After the taxi driver completed the maneuver, the autopilot returned to its original position.
A small review of the latest Tesla firmware v7.0 and an overview of autopilot functions has been published on the Tesla Fans Club website.
In the meantime, Tesla is preparing an update: the version of Autopilot 1.01 with speed adjustment when cornering, “smooth controller”, recognition of lanes on bad roads and improved “learning on the fly”.
