Two Italian architects who took part in the annual
competition of eVolo skyscrapers magazine,
presented an unexpected project Data Tower . As a high-rise they offered a 65-story data center. Their project ranked third in the competition.
The cylindrical tower of the data center, according to the authors, will have to have the effect of a chimney - the heated air inside the tower rushes up and attracts cool air from the outside, providing natural ventilation of the structure. True, the creators of the giant fan at the top of the cylinder still provided for.

')
To achieve high environmental performance, the authors propose to place such data centers in Iceland: thermal energy is used to operate the center, and cool outside air provides almost free cooling.
Servers are located in cells in horizontal rows of 24 cells. At the same time, administrators will not need to run up and down the stairs (although this could replace the fitness room): the system, if necessary, will automatically deliver the desired cell down the special runners located. The idea strongly resembles the organization of automatic car parking.
Vertical cylindrical parkingAll necessary infrastructure should be located outside the building, leaving room inside the cylinder for ventilation and vertical movement of the cells. If necessary, the growth of the data center tower is built on. In the illustrations made specifically for the competition, the authors depicted a tower-data center with a height of 300 meters, which roughly corresponds to 65 floors.
The authors believe that modern data centers, firstly, have a complex structure that needs to be updated and supplemented periodically, and secondly, they are similar in functionality to libraries of the past. Many libraries were built on a large scale, so that their majestic appearance reminded of the importance of the information contained in them. Today, data centers are a concentration of knowledge and culture of civilization, so their architecture can also serve a similar purpose.
First place in the future design competition for skyscrapers was taken by the American horizontal skyscraper "
New York City's Horizon ", all around the perimeter of the encircling Central Park of the city. The second is the
Beehive drones tower, which serves as a parking lot and a place for servicing UAVs working for the good of the city.
