Energomash has signed a contract for the supply of additional RD-180 engines in the USA

The US Congress in 2015 prohibited the use of Russian rocket engines in the country, but then removed the ban due to the lack of an alternative. Later, some congressmen tried to return these sanctions - but they did not succeed, including because of the Pentagon, which needs to bring military satellites into orbit using RD-180 engines. Deliveries continue - and the Russian enterprise Energomash will sell additional engines to the United States.

An Interfax source in the rocket and space industry told the publication that at the moment there are no obstacles to the delivery of additional RD-180 rocket engines to the US, subject to timely payment. Such deliveries will be possible until 2019, after which the US Congress banned the use of Russian rocket engines.

Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Senator John McCain in January 2016 called for the US to ban the use of the RD-180 rocket engines, because they are produced by Energomash, which is "controlled by the Russian government and the" approximate "Vladimir Putin." The United Alliance United Launch Alliance has repeatedly purchased Russian Atlas V rocket engines used by the United States Air Force to launch military and reconnaissance satellites into orbit.

After that, the head of the USAF Deborah Lee James noted that the Pentagon still has no alternative to the RD-180 and cannot abandon Russian-made missiles . Aerojet Rocketdyne and United Launch Services are already working on the alternative to the Russian RD-180, but it will take more than a year to develop. The first launches of American launch systems are planned for 2022-2023.

In 2014, a private American company Orbital Sciences entered into a contract to purchase 60 RD-181 rocket engines from NPO Energomash in the amount of $ 1 billion, and now will purchase 8 more rocket engines - the contract between the company and Energomash has already been signed.

The RD-180 rocket engines are made in Khimki near Moscow .
