The two-legged Schaft robot carries weights on the stairs. It is time for movers to look for a new occupation.

In the series of biped robots replenishment Schaft, one of eight robotic companies under the wing of the Alphabet / Google X research center, showed its latest development.

Schaft is a small, stocky robot about a meter high (in the pulled-in state), very stable and capable of carrying loads of up to 60 kg across rough terrain. His presentation took place three days ago at the NEST 2016 economic conference in Tokyo.

Schaft takes its origins in the JSK Robotics laboratory at the University of Tokyo. Best of all, she is known for winning the 2013 DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials contest with an overwhelming advantage over the competition . Then she disappeared from the field of attention for a long time, without showing her developments. Still.

The robot raises and lowers the center of gravity. The demo video shows how he quickly regains balance if an enemy slips a round pipe under his leg. This is a useful feature when hiking on uneven ground. For example, Schaft is able to pull a heavy backpack as a mule (as long as the battery does not run out) in the campaign for a host. It moves through fairly deep snow and large sea pebbles, where it is difficult for a person to resist.

There is an interesting moment on the video (1:36), where the robot cleans the surface under a rotating brush. That is, it can still be used as a cleaner.

Schaft representatives stressed that while there is no talk about the presentation of the product, this is only a demonstration of the current progress. But still the achievement of the Japanese is very impressive.

By the way, the name Schaft probably comes from the old Japanese anime of the 80s “ Patlabor: Mobile Police ”, there was the robotics corporation Schaft Enterprises, which produced police robots.

However, the current little creature does not look like an armed anime character. Until...
