VKontakte will release its messenger with encryption
Izvestia reports that VKontakte is preparing its own version of the encryption protocol, on the basis of which an instant messenger will be released for several platforms at once: Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS. According to sources, the protocol will be technically based on a cut-down version of the MTProto (Mobile Telecommunication Protocol), authored by former technical director of VKontakte Nikolay Durov. As you know, now he, along with his brother Pavel Durov, is engaged in the development of the Telegram messenger.
VKontakte Operations Director Andrei Rogozov says that the tasks of the new protocol should be the acceleration of applications and the provision of a high level of security for the “transmission of user data”. The timing of the release of instant messengers are not reported. Some polled experts believe that the protocol will work not only in applications of the social network itself, but will provide third-party developers with an API for creating their own applications.
It is well known that there is no shortage of solutions in the instant messenger market: the largest player on it is WhatsApp with 900 million users. The company consists of iMessage, Viber and Telegram, which to some extent is a “related” team of the social network. More recently, Telegram owner Pavel Durov, in his usual manner of expressing his competitors, announced that, in his opinion, “WhatsApp sucks,” not forgetting to mention that his messenger delivers 12 billion messages per day.

This summer, the social network released a mobile photo application Snapster, the functionality of which strongly resembles Instagram: it allows you to take pictures, apply various filters to photos, publish them, put likes and comment.
