At the meeting of the European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) in Amsterdam , it was decided to include the project to build the European Solar Telescope EST in the development program , along with twenty other projects, including five new enterprises.

The 4-meter European solar telescope will be located on the Canary Islands and will become the largest solar telescope in the world. He will study the magnetic properties of the star, sunspots and flares with an unprecedented resolution of several hundred meters of the surface of the Sun.

In connection with giving the project the status of a priority, the Spanish government has already expressed its readiness to provide all-round support in the construction of the telescope.

The concept of the telescope began to develop in 2008 and finished in 2011, spending € 7 million. The telescope will simultaneously use multiple observation systems, which will increase its accuracy and resolution. It is assumed that the construction of the telescope will cost € 150 million, and the operation - € 6.5 million annually.

Along with EST, the development program for 2016 includes such new projects as: DANUBIUS-RI (project on the study of the system of rivers and seas), ACTRIS (Institute for the Study of Aerosols, Clouds and Gases), EMPHASIS (Laboratory for Ensuring Food Security of Humanity in changing climate conditions), KM3Net 2.0 (neutrino telescope) and E-RIHS (research institute of scientific heritage).
