Unique dual meteorite crater discovered in Sweden

Researchers from the University of Gothenburg discovered traces of the fall of two huge meteorites in Sweden. Meteorites have fallen a long time ago, about 460 million years ago. Scientists say about the discovery of two craters, one of which can be called a giant, the second - just big, its size is 1/10 of the size of the first.

According to experts, meteorites fell simultaneously 458 million years ago, forming two shock craters. The size of the first, largest, crater is 7.5 kilometers. The second crater with a diameter of 700 meters is located 16 kilometers from the first.

According to scientists, meteorites were formed 470 million years ago as a result of the collision of two large asteroids somewhere between Mars and Jupiter. Fragments of asteroids left the orbit, and some of them fell to Earth. And the place of the fall of two such fragments just found in Sweden.

The place where the meteorites fell was previously covered by the sea with a depth of 500 meters. At the same time, the water left this place for a few minutes (a part evaporated, a part was thrown back for kilometers), and the bottom of the sea was exposed. With it, the water carried away many fragments formed during the collision of a meteorite with a bed, these fragments were also discovered by geologists.

It is worth noting that in this region, scientists have already found several dozen small meteorites that have survived the fall.
