Nissan's “self-parking” chair - a successful advertisement or a promising innovation?

Welcome to our readers on the pages of the blog iCover ! What will happen if the technology of a smart parking assistant is implemented at the level of an ordinary office chair? - About this question asked the engineers of Nissan and created the "Intelligent Parking Chair" - a chair that can move along the desired "route" and "park" without being accompanied by a person.

Smart parking assistance technologies promoted to the market by the Japanese auto giant Nissan and introduced into ordinary Okamura chairs and chairs can be used in perspective in modern offices, conference rooms, libraries and any other public areas with high attendance. The idea, which at first glance looks a bit strange, on closer examination, is overgrown with attractive details and certain practical content.

From the point of view of the office staff and staff, management of the smart chair is extremely simplified. It is enough to clap your hands or use some other conventional signal and the construction starts moving and, guided by the information received via Wi-Fi channels from the control computer, is sent to the right place in real time. If it is necessary to overcome obstacles in the way, the seat route is immediately automatically adjusted by the control algorithm. And thanks to the computer processing of routes, the whole process of placement of smart chairs, regardless of their number and size of the room, lasts a few seconds and does not require any physical effort.

Information processed by a computer comes from four cameras installed in a room in a special way. As you will see in the video below, the chair really quite quickly and confidently orientates itself in space, choosing the shortest trajectory and not disturbing the other participants in the movement. Sometimes, to achieve the goal, he may need an ingenious maneuver, and even a turn at the desired angle up to 360 degrees. And sometimes he gets an honorary mission to go to the destination with his owner. However, judging by the build of the model, which appeared in the video, the permissible weight of the body transported in the prototype chair still stubbornly tends to zero.

Curious is the assessment of experts from the authoritative publications The Verge and Engadget, divided in their opinion regarding the reality of the appearance of such a chair in the foreseeable future. So, according to The Verge journalists, the demonstrated prototypes are a triumph of modern technologies and a new word in the Internet of things industry. The experts from Engadget , on the contrary, do not harbor any special illusions, explaining the fact of the appearance of the development of intelligent parking assistants by Nissan, one of the original advertising methods. According to the publication, the chairs shown on the video will remain on it, and the office staff and personnel responsible for the cleanliness of the premises will have to push them into their place in the traditional way for more than one year.

Whatever the true goal of the “Intelligent Parking Chair” project, one cannot but agree that the technology implemented in smart chairs copes with its task flawlessly. So, in one interpretation or another, the idea proposed by Nissan engineers will most likely be in demand in the IoT world.
