The prosecutor's office demands to close the popular public VKontakte with 6.8 million subscribers

The Prosecutor's Office of the Central District of St. Petersburg submitted to the Smolninsky District Court of St. Petersburg an application for the recognition of information posted in the virtual community of MDK on the VKontakte network, which is prohibited for distribution in the territory of the Russian Federation.

MDK is one of the most popular VKontakte communities with more than 6.8 million subscribers and about 20 million monthly audience. Previously, it has repeatedly been accused of extremism and xenophobia , so that the current lawsuit did not become something unexpected.

The official website of the prosecutor’s office explains the reasons for claims against the MDK: the audit was carried out on the citizen’s request for violation of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Associations” and the Federal Law on Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection.

The audit found that informational materials “insulting the feelings of believers, humiliating various groups of people on the grounds of religious and national affiliation” are placed in the virtual community of MDK.
