Samsung and Google yesterday announced the transition to a monthly release of security updates for their devices under the Android operating system. Updates may come out more often if serious vulnerabilities are closed.
Samsung AnnouncementGoogle adSamsung has noted that it has recently rolled out several security updates for Galaxy devices using the operational methodology, in response to a serious vulnerability in
Stagefright , recently discovered in all Android versions after 2.2 (≈950 million devices).
“In connection with the latest security issues, we rethought the approach to the release of security updates for our devices in favor of greater responsiveness. Because software is constantly being cracked in new ways, setting up a rapid response process to deliver security updates is critical to keeping them safe. We believe that this new process will significantly improve the security of our devices and is aimed at providing the best quality mobile devices for our users, ”said Dong Jin Koh, executive vice president and head of mobile research and development, IT and Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics.

A similar plan for Nexus devices is also being implemented by Google.
“Security has always been an important priority for Android and Google Play: Android was created from the very beginning with security in mind. Starting this week, Nexus devices will receive regular OTA updates every month with an emphasis on security, in addition to regular platform updates. The first security update of this kind will be released today, August 5, for Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus 10 and Nexus Player. This update contains fixes for vulnerabilities that we reported to partners during July 2015, including fixes for vulnerabilities in libStageFright. Simultaneously, fixes will be made public in the framework of the Android Open Source Project. Nexus devices will receive basic updates for at least two years, and security updates for more than three years from the start of sales or within 18 months of the end of sales at Google Store, ”said Adrian Ludwig, Security Engineer, Lead Engineer Android, and Venkat Rapaka, director of management for Nexus.
