Watching movies / TV shows / TED in Anki

The point is this: with the help of the written program, I automatically break the film / series into separate fragments using the English subtitles. It also automatically creates a tsv file for import into Anki ( http://ankisrs.net ), containing an English transcript and a Russian translation (if Russian subtitles were added) of each fragment.

Then I import to Anki and watch the whole movie as follows:

  1. Watching a video clip.
  2. Audio is listened to while reading English transcript.
  3. Audio is heard again with the reading of the Russian translation, or the translation of unfamiliar phrases just looks.
  4. Revisited video clip.

An example of viewing in this way (all 4 steps) one card:

Sharpe's Rifles (1993)

Shrek (2001)

Since the hearing is still not perceive so well, then the first two points are performed almost always. The third is if after reading the English transcript there are incomprehensible phrases. Fourth - I try more often, but usually only on very complex and interesting fragments.

Problem or interesting cards (an interesting new word has been encountered or it was hard to perceive by ear) I note.

The film / series is usually broken into phrases no longer than 1 min. For example, the Friends series, where on average there are about 350 subtitles, is broken down somewhere into 50–60 cards (at first, since it was difficult to perceive by ear, I divided them into shorter phrases, on average about 100–120 cards per series ). A half-hour series "The Adventures of the Royal Arrow of Sharpe" - an average of 250 cards.

After watching the movie / series, I leave only the marked cards, all the rest - delete.

The program may have glitches / bugs, perhaps something did not take into account, perhaps the instruction is not entirely clear.

There is a version for Windows. To run on Linux, you must additionally install several programs (for more information, see the Wiki). Under MacOS, I think the situation is exactly the same as with Linux.

In general, this program, in a way, is just a lightweight / trimmed version of subs2srs , only with the preliminary merging of individual subtitles into phrases.

I use this method mainly to improve the perception of speech by ear and, more recently, to replenish the passive vocabulary.

Films, TED, the series “Friends” are just watching, tagging interesting cards. I do not revise the fragments yet.

The series "Agent Carter":

There are plans to try to watch only phrases from the movie in Anki, then watch the entire movie in original in the original on TV.

I look at the phone (AnkiDroid for Android), but, in principle, this option is also suitable for viewing at the computer. In this case, it may be worth adding a couple of settings to the mplayer configuration file for easier viewing.

In general, can someone come in handy, like it and use it.
