Orbits technology for smart watches: control the functions of the device look

Eye control has long been used in a number of devices and instruments. Most of them are concepts, but there are also quite real, commercial systems. Now another interesting project is being developed, which is called Orbits. The technology is proposed to use as a control system for smart watches. It remains the usual system - buttons and touch screen.

The Orbits technology was named the best project at the ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) on November 10 last year. Its developers are scientists from the University of Lancaster. They demonstrated the choice with a glance of one of 9 points moving on the screen. The rest of the points, even if they were randomly looked at, did not react - the object reacts to a constant look for a certain time (of course, this is a relatively short amount of time). At the same time, not only scientists themselves, but also volunteers took part in the testing.

The technology works without taking into account the size of the target - it can be both large and very small. Therefore, Orbits can be used in smart watches. Rather, it is there that this technology is proposed to use.

“Our eyes usually move in spurts, moving from point to point. But they can move smoothly - this happens when a person looks at a moving object. We can compare eye movement on the display to determine where a person is looking, ”says Eduardo Velloso, one of the developers.

The various elements of the clock interface are represented by moving objects that rotate clockwise and counterclockwise on the device display. If you look at an element for a certain time, it is activated.



The project has created three types of displays to demonstrate the principle of Orbits. This is a player where the volume of music playback can be changed, and the tracks skip or stop. A screen with notifications, where various social networks are represented by multi-colored moving elements, a menu of missed calls, where you can call back, reply with a text message, or add a number to the phone book.

According to the representatives of the project, for many decades the person did not do anything with his watch, only looked at them, if it was required to find out the time. With the advent of smart watches, functions have become much more, and now you have to invent something new to control these functions. But you can simply use your own opinion, as before.

Now work on the new interface and technology is still ongoing, but many things are already quite working, so it's not far from the final version. It should also be remembered that the project was developed by scientists, rather than professional developers of mobile applications.
