The surgeon, who is going to transplant the head of a Russian programmer, has successfully completed an experiment on a mouse and a monkey
Transplantology is developing, new advances in this area of medicine appear every day. Last year, one of the transplantologists, Sergio Kanavero, stirred up the scientific community , declaring his intention to transplant the head of a person from one body to another. A year ago, he stated that he had his own work, which would make such a transplant possible within two years. And the second year has gone.
Now Kanavero found assistants in the face of scientists from China and South Korea. With them, plus with a few dozens of people from his team, he is going to transplant the head of the Russian programmer Valery Spiridonov, who suffers from degeneration of motor neurons, onto a healthy body. He is now conducting experiments with animals and human corpses, practicing head transplants. Kanavero reported on the results in seven scientific articles, in two scientific journals, Surgery and CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics. Articles will be published in the next few months. ')
Among the materials that came into the possession of Newscientist, there is a video of a mouse that damaged the spinal cord, and then performed the operation, restoring (partially) the locomotor activity. Canavero claims that parts of the spinal cord can be joined with polyethylene glycol. In addition, a special device is used, the vacuum cleaner, which allows the nerves to "fuse".
In addition, Kanavero underwent a monkey head transplantation, while, as the surgeon put it, “there were no neurological injuries.” After the pilot operation, the monkey lived only 20 hours. Canavero says she was left alive for such a short time for ethical reasons. The mobility of the limbs was not preserved, but it was not set for this goal during the operation. The main thing - the brain did not receive damage, while remaining fully functional and after transplantation. “We conducted a pilot study, realizing our ideas on how to prevent injuries during an operation,” says Carnavero.
Now the surgeon is looking for funds for the operation of transplantation of the head of the Russian programmer Valery Spiridonov, in whom doctors diagnosed progressive muscular dystrophy.
As for the location of the operation, most likely it will be China. Last week, a Vietnamese-German hospital from Hanoi, Vietnam offered its operating room.
