How to drink instant coffee on the ISS? High technology in action

For many of us, the day starts with coffee. And the point is not only that this drink helps to return to life very early in the morning, but also in the “ceremony” itself. You stand up, you make grains, you fall asleep ground coffee in a cezve (or the horn of a coffee machine), and you cook. The aroma of coffee while doing half the job - wake up 50%. The remaining 50% of sleepiness is removed after ingestion of the drink itself.

One sheer joy. Until recently, astronauts on the ISS were deprived of this joy. Honestly, I don’t know where the morning of an ordinary astronaut begins, but some of them have all the opportunities to start their working day with coffee. And you can make coffee in a coffee machine (look tag #ISSpresso ), and you can use instant coffee.

Tim Peake, an astronaut from ESA, uses special vacuum coffee bags for coffee brewing, already added cream and sugar substitute. After that, the bag is placed in the most high-tech kettle in the world, which fills the bag with water. After that, it remains only to connect a plastic tube to the neck (so that the liquid does not overflow), and you can drink coffee.

As for the coffee machine, the first time a real espresso astronauts tried in May last year . The coffee machine was delivered to the ISS by the Dragon cargo ship. Testing espresso astronauts failed immediately. The device itself was developed by several companies at once, including Lavazza, Argotec and ESA. The weight of the coffee machine is 20 kg.
