Today is the August falling stars

One of the most beautiful phenomena in astronomy can be observed on August 12-13, when the Earth passes through the Perseid meteorite stream, which appears annually from the constellation Perseus, resulting from the passage of the Earth through the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. Dust particles emitted from the cometary nucleus fly into the atmosphere of the Earth and burn.

In 2008, it will be possible to observe this phenomenon from August 10 to August 13, it is at this time that the peak of the stream falls. In the European territory of Russia, stargazing will be visible on the evening of August 12. You can fully enjoy the summer show only with a sufficiently dark sky and far from the cities, the light of which, hiding a significant part of the meteorites, makes the sight rather pale. Astronomers are advised to leave telescopes and binoculars at home, they only interfere with the review.

Presumably, in the period of the "maximum" of the August stargazing, it is possible to see 50-60 meteors, but there is little hope for this. It is known that in recent years, the activity of the meteorite flow has decreased significantly. So even in the 90s of the 20th century, it was a real “star shower”, when in an hour at least 100 meteors could be counted.

During the year, the inhabitants of the Earth can observe stargazings twice - in August (Perseids) and in November (Leonids). Despite the fact that stargazers are the same, the “summer” is considered to be more vivid.
