Sapphire glass is highly scratch resistant. The reverse side - the high fragility of the material. Apple has been using sapphire crystal since the launch of the iPhone 5 and 5S as a fingerprint on the fingerprint reader, and now in the Apple Watch smart watch.

Monocrystal produces wafers ranging in diameter from two to ten inches. In 2008, for the first time in the world, the company made eight-inch plates, and in 2010 put the production of ten-inch. Sapphire glasses can be used not only in small devices, but also in smartphones and tablets.

The second supplier of glass for Apple Watch Tape called the Chinese Harbin Aurora Optoelectronics Technology. The company is trying to convince local manufacturers to use sapphire glass in smartphones, but its price is much higher than impact resistant glass: a five-inch sapphire screen will cost forty dollars, and a high-impact glass costs three dollars.

Earlier, Apple had planned with GT Advanced Technologies to establish its own production of sapphire glass, but the company went bankrupt.

In 2011, Rosnano for the first time invested in CJSC Monocrystal, at the end of 2012 the amount of investments amounted to 1.3 billion rubles.
