June 20, 1840 Samuel Morse patented the telegraph

Samuel Morse in 1840 patented the electromagnetic telegraph. The great merit of the inventor was the creation of a telegraph code, which represented the letters in the form of "points" and "dash" - short and long signals. By the 20th century, 45,200 Morse devices were installed in nine European countries, of which 8,200 were installed in Russia.

A key or "hammer" was used to close and open the electric circuit. The automatic receiver recorded the signals given by the key. The current pulses of a certain duration made the electromagnetic pen oscillating, reproducing the “dots” and “dashes” on the paper tape. The pen either squeezed the signals or applied them with ink.

Morse invented the telegraph in the 1830s and tried unsuccessfully to sell the invention in Europe and the USA. He patented it in 1840, but only in 1843 managed to translate his idea of communication into reality.

In 1843, Congress, by a single vote, adopted the bill, according to which Morse received a subsidy for the creation of the Washington – Baltimore telegraph line 65 kilometers long. The line was opened in May 1844. After they began to open all new lines, making the telegraph a common means of communication. Later, the European states that used telegraph, but did not confirm Morse’s right to this invention, paid Morse 400,000 francs.
