Rumors about the imminent death of DRM are greatly exaggerated

A new twist to the DRM renegotiation story , which EMI's major recording label conducted with online music stores, made optimists from the camp of opponents of protected content forget their hopes of a quick victory in their struggle with pragmatic capitalists.

After several meetings with Apple, Microsoft, as well as less significant players in the digital music network market (such as RealNetworks), EMI “temporarily suspended” negotiations on the topic of a possible complete abandonment of the use of DRM in its records.

The reason for this was that the parties did not agree on the amount: the British company demanded higher prices for unprotected compositions compared to protected ones and, apparently, did not meet with their opponents in their requests. About what exactly the price increase was still unknown.

Understanding EMI motives is easy. This corporation is the smallest of the “Big Four” of world labels and, in principle, cannot afford big risks. Therefore, at least at first, she wanted to get a cash guarantee that the DRM dropping experiment would not destroy it.

In addition, according to rumors, a competitor Warner once again begins to glance in the direction of EMI and waits for the right moment for the merger offer. It is impossible to say that the British want to resist the attention of a rich suitor from a former colony, and they are unlikely to take steps that could push him away. But Warner in no way wants to abandon the protection of their products.

EMI people tried to smooth out their clearly unpopular decision with assurances that they understand perfectly well that DRM systems do not justify their hopes in the fight against piracy. But they cannot do anything about it yet.
