BlackBerry has denied Pakistan backdoor

BlackBerry, along with the relevant services, will completely stop working in Pakistan, since the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) administration department issued a directive for all mobile operators in the country last July, according to which they must stop their users from accessing BlackBerry Enterprise Services due to "information security ". The reason for this, as the Chief Operating Officer Marty Beard, says in the official blog, was a conflict with the country's authorities: BlackBerry was demanded to be able to read user correspondence, but the company refused.

As follows from the official report of the organization Privacy International, the Pakistani intelligence Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in the middle of 2013 began developing an electronic tracking system for citizens of the country, following the same principles as the American NSA and the British GCHQ (UK Government) Communications Headquarters). The tracking system was called Targeted IP Monitoring System and COE (Common Operations Environments]), and its “power” was supposed to be 660 gigabytes per second. Technology and software solutions to Pakistan were provided by companies such as Alcatel, Ericsson, Huawei, SS8 and Utimaco. According to the authors of the report, ISI worked very closely with its colleagues from the American NSA.

Because email and instant messaging in BlackBerry Enterprise Services are encrypted by default, you won’t be able to access it. Because of this, the Pakistani authorities turned to BlackBerry with a directive, but the company said that they do not have any special backdoors to access the correspondence, and in general the privacy of user data for them is one of the cornerstones of business. At the same time, the document of the Pakistani authorities dealt with the unconditional access to BlackBerry traffic, because there were no inquiries related to the problem of public security. As a result, BlackBerry refused to satisfy the directive of the Pakistani department and, since the company could no longer physically continue working in the country, its business ceases here.

Pavel Durov Telegram messenger is experiencing similar problems, which also focuses on the security of user correspondence due to encryption. As previously reported , Telegram was blocked by the Iranian authorities in response to the refusal to provide them with the ability to monitor the traffic of the messenger.
