The prototype Li-ion battery offered by Huawei charges 10 times faster than existing analogs.
Welcome to the pages of the blog iCover ! We are glad to share extraordinary news from the battery market. This time, Huawei is trying to please its target audience and upset its competitors, which presented its vision of a new generation of lithium-ion batteries at the 56th annual Symposium on electric batteries in the Japanese city of Nagoya on November 13, 2015. Testing of prototypes confirmed their ability to accumulate charge an order of magnitude faster than existing analogues while preserving the resource and initial technical characteristics.
The division of Watt Lab at the Central Research Institute of Huawei Corporation stated that they have completed a series of tests of prototypes of lithium-ion batteries of a new generation, capable of charging in record time.
According to the company's specialists, who demonstrate the novelty at the Symposium, their batteries charge up to 50% in just a few minutes, which is 10 times faster than their common lithium-ion counterparts today. ')
Those who closely follow the news from the battery market will surely (and fairly) notice that such announcements happen from time to time. It is much more difficult to transfer even the most promising technology to commercial rails. One thing is testing and its impressive results, another is the practical implementation of the idea at the level of a commercial sample. And here there may well be and everywhere there are objective obstacles - a significantly increased cost of technology, a reduction in the actual service life compared to the expected one, shortcomings, and more. It is difficult to say how much the potential risks are already taken into account by Watt Lab engineers in the presented Huawei battery prototype. At the same time, today we have the opportunity to evaluate the preliminary test results presented by Huawei at an authoritative scientific event, which we will do.
To assess the charging speed, Huawei introduced 2 prototypes: a mini - battery with a capacity of 600 mAh and a battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh.
Battery charging 600 mAh to 68%.Charging time - 2 minutes
Battery charging 3000 mAh to 48%.Charging time - 5 minutes.
The record, without any exaggeration, increase in the rate of charging was made possible by the introduction of heteroatoms , which in this compound act as a catalyst for a chemical reaction in the anode graphite molecules. (A heteroatom is any atom of a compound that is not a hydrogen or carbon atom ). In the course of such a reaction, positive lithium ions are introduced (intercolated) and transported through carbon compounds an order of magnitude faster. In this case, the charge density and battery life, according to the Watt Lab, are preserved.
For comparison, the latest version of fast charging technology proposed by Qualcomm ( Quick Charger 3.0 ) allows you to charge the battery up to 80% in 35 minutes.
“The technology proposed by Huawei ... in the near future will significantly increase the mobile potential not only of smartphones, tablets and e-books, but also the rapidly growing army of all kinds of wearable gadgets - smart watches, bracelets, chargers ... and also reduce battery charging time electric cars. It will take quite a bit of time and we will be able to charge the batteries of our mobile equipment at full capacity for as long as we drink a cup of coffee! ”- noted in a press release of the company.
I would like to wish the company success in the speedy promotion of technology to the market and its further development, because, ultimately, such success is what directly affects our quality of life.
