Why did not Windows 9 come out? Joe Belfiore hinted at the answer with a binary code on his T-shirt

At the last Microsoft Build 2015 conference, Vice President Joe Belfiore appeared in a blue T-shirt with a white logo styled as a Windows logo. Journalists immediately noted that Microsoft is not devoid of a sense of humor and self-irony - a hint of the colors of the “blue screen of death” turned out to be obvious. On closer inspection, the geometric shapes in the logo were formed by text from a binary code. To take a screenshot and translate the code into ASCII-characters, programmer Kevin Gosse was not lazy.

In a larger view, the Belfiore T-shirt looks like this:

Kevin left a tweet in his tweet:

The top left flag of the logo reads “ There are 10 types of people in the world ” or “There are only two types of people in the world .” Here at Microsoft they hint that in the expression “2 types of people” the digit 2 in the binary code is written in combination 10 .

The top right checkbox jokes that " Windows 10, because 7 8 9 ". Here the play on words - in English, the number 8 sounds exactly the same as the verb “is” ( ate , in the sense of absorbing food) in the past tense. In other words, "Windows 7 ate Windows 9."

The lower left flag apparently refers to the conference participants or the Windows Insider participants " Congrats on being one of the first " - "Congratulations - you are one of the first."

And finally, the bottom right box says about the future: “Windows Insiders help us develop the future. Talk to us @ Windows ”-“ Windows Insiders helps us create the future. Tell us about Windows. ”

Among those who retweeted Kevin's tweet, Joe Belfiore can be easily spotted.

In the box of witty answers to the same question about Windows 9, the answer published by the user reddit with the nickname cranbourne is known. He claims that this way they took care of the developers using the code:
if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9")) { /* 95 and 98 */ } else {

In this way, the operating system version was determined, and the appearance of Windows 9 in the answer, which is fundamentally different from Windows 95 and 98, would have made it necessary to rewrite the code differently.
