The US fears that Russian submarines will cut off the main Internet channels during a military conflict

Russian submarines and ships actively ply in areas where vital submarine trunk cables run. In this regard, American experts express concern that during a military conflict, Russia may simply turn off the Internet in an arbitrary region, writes the NY Times. These fears are exacerbated by the fact that the global electronic communications, commerce and financial system are critically dependent on the Internet. Through the Internet daily passes transactions for $ 10 trillion. Disabling communication can be quite painful.

This information was confirmed to the newspaper by more than five sources from the Pentagon and intelligence services. “Every day I fear what the Russians can do,” said Rear Admiral Frederick Rogge (Frederick J. Roegge), commander of the submarine fleet of the US Navy in the Pacific.

In private conversations, the military is more outspoken, writes the NY Times. They say that everywhere from the North Sea to Northeast Asia and even near the American coast, the activity of the Russian fleet has increased significantly along the routes of the trunk cables. The activity of Russian submarine patrols has increased by almost 50% over the past year.

Last month, the Russian ship Yantar (according to the official classification, a scientific ship that deals with oceanography) with two self-propelled deep-water vehicles slowly passed along the east coast of the United States on the way to Cuba. There is one of the main trunk cables, in the Guantanamo Bay area. This area is continuously monitored by US reconnaissance satellites, ships and aircraft. US Navy officials say Yantar lander have the ability to cut cables at a depth of several kilometers.

“The level of activity is comparable to what we saw during the Cold War,” one of the European diplomats told the newspaper.

Norway, one of the NATO members, is so concerned about the activity of the Russian fleet that it asked its neighbors for help in tracking Russian submarines.

Experts explain that submarine cables are permanently damaged, including anchors of fish trawlers and as a result of natural disasters. But all this happens usually near the shore at a shallow depth, where the damage is easily repaired within a few days. The Pentagon fears that Russia could damage cables to much greater depths.
