Electric cars are getting closer: the cost of batteries will drop one and a half times by 2018

Electric cars can afford people with high incomes, but according to a study published in Nature , this may change by 2018. Reducing the cost of batteries, which make up from 25% to 50% of the cost of an electric vehicle, will make this type of transport affordable.

Manufacturers of electric cars hide the real cost of lithium-ion batteries. To find out the price changes in this area, scientists from the Stockholm Environment Institute investigated more than 80 estimates of value from various sources published in the last eight years.

The cost of lithium-ion batteries from 2007 to 2014 decreased from $ 1,000 to $ 410 per kilowatt-hour. At the same time, prices for market leaders, for example for Tesla and Nissan, are even lower - $ 300 and will decrease by 8% annually. The authors of the study predict a decline in prices to $ 230 per kilowatt-hour in 2018.

From a quarter to half the cost of an electric car is the cost of batteries. Reducing prices will lead to changes in the market: buying a car with an electric motor will be more profitable given the price of refueling. Now in the US, charging batteries for 300 miles is less than ten dollars. Researchers at the Stockholm Environment Institute are confident that the fall in battery prices to $ 150 per kilowatt-hour can lead to a "potential paradigm shift in transportation technology."
