Elon Musk said on his twitter that on the coming Thursday, Model S owners will begin to receive an update of version 7.0, which will include an important autopilot function. Within about five days, the update should get all the cars around the world. A little later, the SUV Model X, which is now being sold in very limited quantities, should receive a similar function. Updating electric vehicles, as in previous cases,
will come "through the air .
"It should be noted that, although Musk himself uses the word “autopilot”, in fact, this definition should be understood only as a small part of the functions that are usually implied when it comes to truly unmanned vehicles, which Google, for example, is working on. In the case of Tesla, autopilot mode will be activated on main roads and highways, with traffic signs installed and where there are no pedestrians. In difficult traffic conditions, the driver will have to drive an electric car independently. But, as Musk noted earlier, during testing it turned out that when traveling from Seattle to San Francisco, it will be almost impossible to hold the steering wheel.
Interestingly, in early August, Musk said that the engineers had one unsolved problem in the autopilot functionality: low contrast of road markings on gray concrete during sunset. Apparently, the problem was successfully solved:

In addition to the autopilot features, the update will also contain functions for controlling automatic parallel parking. Earlier it became
known that the car can be called from the parking lot and parked using a smartphone, but with some restrictions.
About two weeks ago, Ilon Musk
predicted in an interview that it would take about three more years to create truly autonomous cars. And a lot of time should be spent on legislative regulation of this issue.
