Honda will test its own robomobili on the roads of California

Robo-mobile turned out to be a very good year. Several large companies, including both IT giants and automakers, are engaged in developing their own automatic vehicle control systems. Now Honda has also been added to the list of such companies. The project to create its own auto control system is running smoothly, and now Honda has received permission from the authorities of Concord, California, USA, to test their robotic vehicles on city roads.

This summer, the company showed a prototype Acura RLX, with a system that includes several sensors and a computer “brain” that processes the sensor data. But after that, Honda stopped talking about their cars. Now the secret became clear, and the company announced its own plans to develop cars with a computer control system. By the way, now in California have the right to conduct tests of Volkswagen, Mercedes, Google, Delphi Automotive, Tesla Motors, Bosch, Nissan, Cruise Autimation and BMW.

Robo-mobile trials are now allowed not only in this state, but also in Nevada, Michigan and Florida.

Interestingly, companies are engaged not only in the creation of entire systems for driving, but also of individual elements of such systems. For example, on Friday, ten auto companies immediately agreed to equip their cars with an automated braking system, which will work if the vehicle’s sensors detect an obstacle, a collision with which is inevitable (here it means not only the car, but any other object that may be dangerous).

The agreement was signed by Audi, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo. The companies soon promised to integrate such a system into all their cars, but, unfortunately, the date of the project is unknown. Nevertheless, this is quite an interesting achievement, since these companies produce more than half (57%) of all cars per year.

There is still the possibility that officials will not wait until companies voluntarily begin to fulfill this obligation. It is likely that a law will soon be passed obliging car manufacturers to install an automatic braking system in every new car.

According to experts, this step will help reduce the number of accidents by 80% only in the United States. In this country, 1,700 people die as a result of accidents, and 500,000 people receive injuries of varying severity.
