How to disconnect and get to work

When you are "in the work zone" (comfort zone, work flow - the time when you get everything and the work "burns in your hands" - approx. Translation), you create the best examples of your work. But how to get into this “zone” when colleagues, and emails and messages on ICQ claim your attention?

37signals covers the four cities and eight time zones. From Provo, Utah to Copenhagen, Denmark, the five of us are separated by 8 hours. One positive side effect of this separation is that there is time for loneliness. People need a continuous stream of time to work together.

There are only 4-5 hours a day when we all work at the same time together. At a time when a team in the US is sleeping, David from Denmark is working. The rest of the time we work when David sleeps. This gives us about half a day to work together and the second half for independent labor.

Guess which part of the day is most effective for work? Independent. And this is not surprising. Many people prefer to work either early in the morning or late in the evening - at a time when they are not disturbed.

When no one is missing you for a long time, you can catch the “zone”. The “zone” is the time when you are most productive. That’s when you don’t have to switch between different distraction tasks. Nobody distracts you with a question or message via e-mail or instant messenger. Only the "zone" when there is real progress in the work.

Getting into the "zone" takes a lot of time. Therefore, a break is your enemy. It's like a “ fast sleep phase ” - first you have to fall asleep, and only then comes the phase. Any interruptions in sleep cause your body to start over. REM sleep is a period of sleep magic. Self-study time is a period of real performance magic.

One clue how to create time to work alone. Set a rule at work: tick half a day for independent work. From 10 am to 2 pm, no one can talk to each other (except for lunch). Assign the first or afternoon to work alone. Just make sure that this period will be protected from external stimuli and interruptions.

Time for independent work helps to get away from communication dependence. For a while, drop instant messages, phone calls, or meetings. Avoid any emails that require an instant response from you.

Just disconnect and get to work.
