The Atlas humanoid robot from Boston Dynamics has left the lab walls. He went for a walk over rough terrain in the forest of Massachusetts. Although some media believe that the robot " moves like a drunken Iron Man, " but the obvious must be admitted: Atlas has become much better able to maintain balance on an uneven surface. One of the founders of Boston Dynamics, Marc Raibert, spoke in the section of robotics at the Fab Lab conference. He spoke about the new achievements of Atlas. The robot was specifically released into nature, because there it ends up in an “unpredictable environment” where anything can happen. Developers were interested to see how Atlas behaves in such conditions.
Boston Dynamics first published a video of how the Atlas moves outdoors. He looks pretty confident, as if following the trail of a runaway man. ')
The humanoid robot maintains balance in the same way as a person does: he moves his arms and tilts his torso to shift the center of gravity by one vertical with the support area.
Atlas is a mobile robot specially designed for traveling over rough terrain. On particularly difficult terrain, he can use his upper limbs to climb slides or wade through crowded spaces. Stereo cameras and a laser range finder are installed on the robot head. Thanks to the new software, it keeps the balance much better than many robots participating in the DARPA Robotics Challenge this year (on video).
