The other day, Linus Torvalds
presented the final release of the Linux 4.0 kernel (3.20). The release of the new kernel release went according to plan, without any problems. At the same time in Linux 4.0 the usual number of new features, Linus Torvalds states that version 4.1 will be more innovative (if I may say so), there will be more new features and capabilities. It is worth noting that earlier the release of the kernel was planned to be assigned to version 3.20, but after voting in Torvalds’s blog on Google Plus, it was decided to choose V4.0.
As for version 4.0, there are quite a few updates that are related to graphics drivers. For example, added support for DisplayPort audio in the Radeon DRM driver, plus improved fan speed control.
Intel drivers were updated, and developers were able to add support for Intel Skylake.
')
Improved support for Parallel NFS (pNFS), improvements to Btrfs RAID 5/6, and updated OverlayFS functionality. Also added support for a number of new ARM processors, IBM z13, improved support for various types of software.
An excellent innovation is the integration of kernel update mechanisms without the need for a reboot. There are patches to support non-volatile memory, plus a number of new features for debugging user applications. The maximum number of innovations concerns device drivers. There are 4 million different objects in the project repository, plus 500 thousand commits.
