3d printer in the office of computer science, application experience

Recently, we conducted a techno-marathon for the assembly of 3D printers (in Yekaterinburg). The informatics teacher Pavel Tomshin participated in the marathon as a volunteer.

Pavel’s school (Lyceum No. 109) already has a 3D printer, and since the topic of using 3D printing technology in educational processes, I was interested in schools for a long time (in my opinion quite interesting and promising), I asked him about the experience of using a 3D printer in his school (high school). That's about it and will be an article.

But the photo from the techno-marathon - Pavel helped us a lot at the event, because already had experience with this printer model, helps to install the control module.

Start

Paul:
The need for 3D printing in Lyceum №109, which had been ripening for some time, materialized in the form of bq PRUSA i3, obtained for winning the Robot Racing robotic competition held by the Ural Federal University in early 2015. Since no harmful vapors are released during PLA printing , the printer has found its place on the teacher’s table. Now, a fourth thing has been added to things that a person can always look at: the process of printing a 3D printer.

Models

Of course, first of all models are printed from the Internet, so interesting models were printed

3D-MAX modeling

Pavel has educational versions of 3D-MAX installed on computers in the computer science office and the guys create models in this program themselves.

This is what Paul himself says:
As I understood the technology of 3D printing, there was an understanding of what and how to work with students to promote 3D technologies in the lyceum. Developed and implemented with fifth graders a trial course of 3D modeling with the subsequent printing of the results of classes. We model in 3DMax (Lyceum has a license for 14 seats Autocad, 3DMax, especially since these products have been free for educational institutions for a couple of years). The very first lesson involves the creation of a spectacular model - "a ball in a cube"

In the next lesson, the guys created a “medal with text”. Work with spline Text and Extrude modifier guys google it yourself

He threw the task and the director: to create premium products for the MDO Constellation event held in our Lyceum. Born design

For lessons

Of course, 3D modeling can be useful in school subjects.

From the mathematics teacher Yusupova Tatyana Viktorovna our 3D-circle received an order for the manufacture of three-dimensional figures - visual aids for geometry lessons in high school. For pyatiklashek perform this task was not difficult.

Pyramid in the piggy bank to mathematicians:

Body rotation (maturing lesson in mathematics in the comp. Class - "Body of rotation", with further printing:

Construction

Of course, a separate topic in 3D modeling is design.

The guys made a lamp. Designed, printed out, finished with a file to stick in 2 batteries and a LED on an adhesive tape:

3d print for Lego

Pavel leads a school in Lego-robotics, and one of the problems is the organization of the storage of parts.

And for this he did - Lego modules for training. Where mounts are made using 3D printing, it is for certain parts from the Lego kit. At the beginning of the lesson you can see where to get, at the end - whether everything is in place.

In the development of the theme: mobile boxing for field work.

3D printing in robotics

An example of expanding LEGO functionality through 3D printing - a holder was made for the marker so that you could control the drawing: lower / raise the marker. For the lesson of computer science "Coding of graphic information."

Presentations

Excursion, in the framework of "MDO Constellation":

Immediately is the application for 3D printing :)

Robotics

I asked Paul a question about the prospects for the use of robotics in educational processes, his thoughts on this:
There is a problem of interdisciplinary connections when solving problems by students. Example: in mathematics, the student clearly knows what C = 2Pi * R is, in computer science he does not know the formula for the length of a circle. Robotics appeals to interdisciplinary connections, showing where and how in practice you can apply what you learned in the lessons of physics, mathematics, geometry, and computer science. The trend “Engineering Personnel of Russia” obviously requires the introduction of engineering subjects in the school. We need a public resource for developments in this area. Association. Cities / regions - support of competitions, grants to teams of winners of local stages for a trip to events of the following levels.
