Google is working on Android for virtual reality

Sources Wall Street Journal reported that the search giant has made its share in the emerging trend of virtual reality. Google does not plan to release a hardware solution, following the example of many of its competitors in the market, but instead are working on a special version of its Android operating system. Like the elder sister, Android for virtual reality will be open and free for manufacturers.

The fact that the device for virtual reality - this is a clearly emerging trend of the mobile industry, virtually no doubt. The company Oculus VR was able to collect $ 2.4 million on Kickstarter and was bought by Facebook last spring for $ 2 billion. At the last Mobile World Congress, the Taiwanese HTC in collaboration with Valve showed its virtual reality glasses called Vive. Similar to the purpose of the shlm, known as Project Morpheus, Sony showed at Game Developer Conference 2015. In the winter of this year, Microsoft showed its version of VR-glasses - Hololens , in which digital objects are superimposed on the picture of the real world.

One of the engineers responsible for the new Android is Clay Bevor . He had previously participated in the Google Cardboard project - some sort of virtual reality glasses, working with a smartphone, a special application for it, a pair of lenses and a cardboard case for them. Since the first announcement of Cardboard in 2014, partners of the search giant have been able to sell more than half a million sets, the cheapest of which costs $ 18.95.

A little earlier, Google announced that Google Glass glasses, which partially used the ideas of virtual reality, are once again entering the stage of a research project. They should be re-released with new hardware and new software. Probably because of the presence in its portfolio of a product similar in concept to VR glasses, Google decided to limit itself to what the company is already bringing success on smartphones and tablets.

More recently, the search giant lost a valuable employee. Marie Lou Jepsen, who previously occupied one of the leading positions in Google X's secret projects laboratory, moved to Oculus. She is known as the chief engineer of the project for ultra-cheap OLPC laptops.

In Google, there is Project Tango - a software development project that is designed to create a user's virtual environment from smartphone camera shots.
