Communications Minister pledged grants to transfer Russians to Tizen and Sailfish mobile OS

Nikiforov is still enjoying iOS

Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov wants to transfer Russians from American iOS and Android mobile systems to Tizen and Sailfish phones, thus breaking the US monopoly on mobile devices. The minister said that "Android from Google is becoming an increasingly closed and monopolized system." In response to Twitter’s objections to Tizen’s insecurity with applications, he said: “We’ll give grants to developers who will transfer their applications from Android and iOS monopoly to Tizen and Sailfish independent.”

In the summer of 2014, Nikiforov was already concerned about the closeness of iOS - he invited Apple and SAP to disclose their source codes to Russian specialists. Apparently, without waiting for this, the minister decided to act in a different way, and generally refuse the products of the American giants.

Despite the statements of the Minister, the Android system remains an open source operating system, which anyone can read . On the contrary, the source code of the OS Sailfish, on which the Finnish company is working, is closed, not to mention the fact that Finland is participating together with the EU in sanctions actions against the Russian Federation.

System Tizen, a joint development of Samsung and Intel, has not yet received wide distribution. The only Samsung Z1 smartphone was released last month and is being sold only in India so far. According to ArsTechnica , Tizen is a kind of Android clone for the poor. The Z1 smartphone is weak in performance, while OSes and applications have fewer features than their Android versions. The South Korean company decided not to throw this phone on the mass Russian market, and focus only on the corporate one. The only SailFish-based smartphone, Jolla , is already being sold by us.

However, Nikiforov on Twitter announced that soon in Russia smartphones on Tizen and Sailfish will be sold in droves. It remains to hope that this will not mean a ban on sales of smartphones on iOS or Android. It is not yet known whether the statements of the minister are consistent with the official policy of the ministry, about the extent and timing of the grants, and what development they will be allocated to.
