How we did evomobil

Hi, my name is Vasily Ryabov, I am a member of the Evolution: Battle for Utopia mobile game development team. It has become a special project for me and for our entire team. Probably no other game inspired so much enthusiasm and desire in us to share our findings with others in the development process. I know a lot of cases in the gaming industry, when developers did not “feel” their project, did not give themselves to the game entirely. Alas, this is reflected in it in the most pitiable manner. With the “Evolution”, our team didn’t just “have a mutual understanding” - for us, from the very beginning, this project became native. So much so that some developers can now justifiably be called game evangelists. For example, I offered my own car for a small joint project with 3M, connected with Evolution.

While working on the game and additions (by the way, the last of them, “The Legacy of the Dominion”, is released on February 10), we have accumulated a lot of groundwork, which we tried to share with everyone we managed to reach. My colleagues spoke at various conferences with presentations on how we optimized those or processes in the Unity engine , on pitfalls when porting a game from iOS to Android. We wanted to make life easier for other programmers by telling us about the useful experience that the work on Evolution gave us. By the way, shortly after the game was released, the main artist of our team wrote a post about how he created one of the most memorable characters of the game, doggy .

And when 3M turned to Mail.Ru Group, proposing to do some kind of joint project, the developers of Evolution were most excited about the idea. Having discussed the possibilities of 3M materials, we came up with a new way to promote the game: to glue some car with a film with a “luminous” pattern. It turned out that 3M produces a self-adhesive film for placing graphics on cars, which is also capable of protecting the paint layer from the impact of gravel flying from under the wheels of other cars. Moreover, the company 3M has picked up a new material that has a retroreflective ability, and you can print a full-color image on it. That is, it will glow as a road sign at night when the headlights fall on it.

Another nice thing is that the film protects the car paint from burning out, so before selling it you can remove it and put it in the price for the perfect look of the car.

As a passionate fan of the game, I offered my car for a project with 3M. Many people asked me if it was a pity to give it away for such experiments. I am surprised myself, but no, it was not a pity. First of all, I really liked the idea of drawing a picture dedicated to the game. And secondly, I trusted 3M technologists.

When teammates found out about this idea, everyone liked it very much. Together with the artist, we quickly developed a layout, it was printed on materials 3M series Controltac ™ and Scotchlite ™, and then successfully pasted on the car. Unfortunately, the video does not convey the beauty of the picture, especially when it reflects light in the evenings. Honestly, in life it looks more impressive. Here we have such an evolution.

Preparing for film sticking.

Since the car was new, the entire surface preparation for gluing was reduced to a visit to a car wash.

Fitting.

The process of sticking.

Result

We even ordered frames for numbers labeled "Evolution: Battle for Utopia."

In the early days, colleagues often came to look at the result; they led whole excursions from other departments. In the evening, on the road, luminous elements attract the attention of other drivers. Especially at traffic lights or in traffic. All around are looking at the drawing, the passengers are directly staring. Yes, and most want to more often admire the car, especially when it is clean.
