The well-known service for storing image files imgur introduced a new service for creating animated GIF. This is the news that appeared today in
several IT-editions . But in fact, everything is somewhat more complicated.
imgur has created and is promoting its embedded browser video format called GIFV. Such animations look better than ordinary and familiar GIFs, and weigh an order of magnitude (or even two) less. But this video is nothing more than a wrapper for the
WebM media
standard , which Google introduced back in 2010. Since then, the format has been actively advertised, and is now supported by all modern browsers. More and more sites are picking up this format (entertainment sites are among the pioneers), which is much more convenient for GIF - it weighs less, and besides, you can pause or rewind the video to any place.

you to select the URL of the video you want to work with. Upload your file or select, for example, a video from youtube, it’s impossible - it should be a direct link to the video file. After a short processing of the video, the user can select the beginning of the video clip, which will be converted to gif, and its duration (no more than 15 seconds). Optionally, you can enter a text annotation that will be embedded in the video. If the resulting gif exceeds 10 MB, it will automatically be issued in the format gifv (webm).

A direct link to the resulting file allows you to view it in a browser, embed it in pages and download both in webm format and in GIF format. For comparison, one of the test fragments of video in GIF format weighs 36 megabytes, and in the format of webm - only 304 Kb.
