Samsung launches 20nm LPDDR4 production

Yesterday, Samsung talked about the launch of mass production of 8-gigabit LPDDR4 chips. The start of commercial supplies is scheduled for next year. The message is interesting significant improvements in performance - power consumption and speed.

Samsung claims that the effective speed of the chips can reach 3.2 GHz. Some manufacturers predict that the frequency of LPDDR4 will be higher than that of DDR4.

Significantly improved and power consumption. The graph shows the bandwidth and energy expended in terms of data bits. The capacity of devices with LPDDR4 will gradually reach 35 GB / s, with DDR3 it is 17 GB / s, more than two times lower.

And the storage energy drops by more than two times - from four picojoules in LPDDR3 to less than 2 in LPDDR4. This means improved power consumption of mobile devices, although, of course, the real situation will depend on many factors - manufacturers like to change the frequency of work. But even with these amendments in LPDDR4 laid a good potential to increase battery life.

A large bandwidth of RAM on mobile devices is needed, for example, to play 4K content or to run games comfortably at this resolution.

At the moment, so far no manufacturer has expressed a desire to use LPDDR4 in their products. We may see the debut of a new memory in the Galaxy S7 or another Samsung smartphone, but for now this is only a guess.
