DIYVR: cardboard virtual reality helmet with any smartphone as a display

The topic of virtual reality is now on the crest of popularity, and the downward trend is clearly not observed. Many technical corporations create their own versions of virtual and augmented reality helmets. There is also such an interesting project as DIYVR (DIY Virtual Reality).

The developers had previously raised funds for their project, and by the end of the campaign on Kickstarter they had collected twice as much as required. Included with the glasses are: open-source web tools for creating your own version of the software for glasses and a set for assembling points (all this is attached to the baseball cap, which also comes in the kit).

Tony Parisi, well-known in the field of virtual reality, is participating in this project. He is actively working on the possibility of adding virtual reality support to open-source GLAM software.

As in other virtual reality helmets, user actions (for example, turning the head) are repeated in virtual reality, where the user's viewing angle changes. This is achieved by activating the gyro and accelerometer. The software creates two different pictures for the right and left eyes. Combining images and gives a stereoscopic effect.

It is worth noting that at this stage, the installation of the DODOcase application is necessary for normal operation of the device (can be found in Google Play or the App Store). Over time, the developers plan to add the ability to enter the virtual reality in a mobile browser. According to the plan, in the near future it will be possible to use virtual reality to work with the browser, and web applications developed specifically for this project.

The most interesting is the price of the kit, which is 50 US dollars. The cost of the points themselves developers estimate at $ 25, so the remaining 25 - this is the price of a baseball cap. It is a pity, of course, that you cannot use your own baseball cap, saving $ 25.
