Proofpoint researchers discovered the first large-scale hacker attack that used televisions and at least one refrigerator. This is the first
botnet from home appliances and from the
Internet of Things sphere.

In its
press release, Proofpoint noted that the hacking in question was made between December 23, 2013 and January 6, 2014. Devices from a botnet three times a day sent letters in packages of 750 thousand at a time from 100 thousand devices to enterprises and individuals around the world. Three quarters of the letters were sent from ordinary computers, and about a quarter from home devices, such as multimedia centers, routers, televisions. At least one refrigerator was part of this network.
And most importantly - it turned out that one should not be
too smart to hack home gadgets like a TV or a refrigerator. Many simply did not change the default password.
