Strati: electric car that can be printed per day

3D printing is making great strides now. On 3D printers (conventional and special design) print organs, parts of the spacecraft and cars. But so far, only car bodies were created in this way, but the Strati is an electric car that is printed in its entirety.

Only electronics, motor and wheels are not printed here, everything else is the result of a 3D printer. The development of the car itself took about 4.5 months (from the design stage to the creation of a real car). The founder of Local Motors , which created this electric car, claims that in the near future, development will take much less time - just 6 weeks. And on the printout of the finished model - a day, not more.

A key factor in such effective work is simplification. Usually the car is created from thousands of parts. But in Strati - only 49 parts. It looks fantastic, but the head of the company explains that everything is quite real. The fact is that the developers have tried to create such a structure, where most of the parts are created from the same material. Of course, the motor, suspension and electronic components cannot be printed, but everything else can be created on a printer using carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic.



Now the developers are bringing the technology to the ideal, trying to also create such a printing method that would allow creating on a 3D printer from one material parts with different characteristics (hardness, brittleness, etc.). For example, the seats should be softer and more elastic, the body - hard and not very fragile.

The first Strati model was printed in 4 days, but the developers. as mentioned above, they are going to shrink this time to 1 day. The electric car is created on a special 3D printer, the size of which is comparable to the size of the transport container. The price of the first copy of the car was 30 thousand dollars, but it is clear that with more or less streaming release the price of the car will be much lower.

At the same time, the car can be modified by adapting it for various conditions (desert is one design, cold Alaska is another).
