It is possible that the web version of WhatsApp is being prepared.

About a week ago, Pavel Durov gave an interview to Techcrunch, in which he expectedly described the successes of the Telegram messenger. In addition to statistics on the number of users and registrations, Durov also suggested that his immediate competitor in the market - WhatsApp messenger - should soon launch the web version, because "... they [WhatsApp tutorial] tried to hire our web developers." In the context of the fact that WhatsApp versions really exist only for mobile platforms, and Telegram is available through the desktop, then such awareness can be considered a hint of competition, and the author of the controversial feature is Durov from the beginning.

Technical observers of the Danish Android World resource obviously became interested in the question and downloaded the beta version of WhatsApp from the developer’s site, bypassing Google Play, hoping that there could be either the new functionality itself or hints of it.

After unpacking the APK file and examining strings.xml, they found the following there:

The name parameter in the selected lines has fairly transparent values, which suggest the near appearance of the web version of WhatsApp. It is possible that they are intended to indicate the time of the last activity of the user, which is usually displayed in the application header. However, while the website at web.whatsapp.com is at least not ready: when visiting, the user is prompted to select a Google account, but after logging in, a redirect occurs to the same page.

The WhatsApp messenger, founded by Ukrainian-born Jan Koum, was acquired by Facebook at the beginning of this year for $ 19 billion (a little earlier, the Instagram price for the same Facebook was only $ 1 billion), but remained independent; per month WhatsApp use about 600 million people. The Telegram, founded by Pavel Durov, positions itself as a listen-free messenger, thanks to the MTProto protocol used, which involves the use of various encryption technologies.
