Yesterday, a blog for Google developers
reported on the success of their Cardboard accessory sales, which is designed to create "virtual reality glasses" using a smartphone in the "home". None more, but Cardboard, which is a few stapled cartons and a pair of lenses, was sold in an amount exceeding 500,000 copies.
The project was
first shown at the annual Google I / O 2014 conference about six months ago, where it was defined by the speakers as an “easy way” to get glasses for virtual reality (it is interesting to note that the project engineers did it as part of
the 20% rule ) . Cardboard is a kind of designer, where the details are cardboard elements that are assembled in the likeness of real VR-glasses, familiar either from films or from the Oculus project.
The source of the picture for glasses is a smartphone, for which a special pocket with two holes is provided in the Cardboard, in which the lenses sold with a set of lenses are reinforced. A special application divides the image of the smartphone into two fields, which creates a stereo effect for the observer in such "cardboard glasses".
It looks like this:

The price of such a kit in the "initial configuration" is
$ 18.95 - despite the fact that Google distributes to anyone and Cardboard
drawings , which can be freely used for home-made.
For those interested in the technical side of the case, engineers have prepared several updates: SDK Cardboard versions for
Android and
Unity developers are available. Also, users have become available for download and new applications.
