Do not comets bring water to Earth? Surprise from comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Comet 67p

The Philae probe is now "asleep", but scientists will be analyzing the data obtained by the device for 60 hours of wakefulness for a long time. Now the results of the analysis of water (water vapor) from the comet have appeared, and these results have presented a not very pleasant surprise to the supporters of the theory about bringing water to Earth by comets . This theory has it that in the early history of the earth, the comet bombardment of the surface was an ordinary event. There were many comets, the waters on comets — even more, the total is one — the oceans and seas on Earth are the result of the comets bombing our planet. But the results of the analysis of water from the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko say something different. The fact is that in this water there is much more deuterium (heavy hydrogen) than in terrestrial water. Deuterium in "cometary water" is three times more than in terrestrial water.

Kathrin Altwegg (Kathrin Altwegg), scientific director of the ROSINA program (a scientific instrument that measures the amount of water evaporated by a comet, and also analyzes gases and water vapor emanating from the comet's nucleus as it approaches the Sun) for the ancient Earth, there were not comets, but asteroids from the Kuiper belt. Now, according to Altvegg, asteroids are mostly stone objects with a minimum of water (in the form of ice) on the surface. But 3.8 billion years ago, asteroids were richer in water, and the fall of asteroids on Earth also happened quite often.

In fairness, it must be pointed out that the analysis of the water of other comets (the approach to the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko is not the first experience in the history of space exploration by man) showed approximately the same composition with terrestrial water. But the strange picture demonstrated by the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko violates the harmonious and cloudless theory of the transportation of water to Earth by these very cosmic wanderers.

If scientists succeed in waking Philae, another scientific tool, Ptolemy, will help conduct more accurate analysis of the water from the comet. Another possibility is the analysis of water vapor during the passage of Rosetta through the comet tail, during the approach of the comet with the Sun.
