LTE in Russia has become slower

In November-December 2014, the information and analytical agency TelecomDaily conducted a test drive of LTE speed in 15 cities of Russia . In each of the cities, a test car traveled from 230 to 980 km, measuring the speed of data transmission on a laptop.

It turned out that the access speed of the three telecom operators, on average, is 11 Mbit / s, which is 20-25% lower than it was in the I quarter. 2014

Experts believe that the reduction in speed is due to the growth of the subscriber base and the increasing load on the network. Over 8 months, the number of LTE subscribers in Russia increased from 2.5 million to 5 million.

Although operators are building networks at a high rate (see diagram), this is more about covering new regions than adding towers to old regions. From the point of view of the provider, 11 or 14 Mbit / s - what's the difference if the subscriber pays the same amount.

From March to November 2014, the average speed of LTE access for Moscow MegaFon subscribers decreased from 14.5 to 13.9 Mbit / s, MTS from 15 to 13.3 Mbit / s, and VimpelCom from 11.7 to 10.6 Mbit / s (all figures in Moscow).

The TelecomDaily study was carried out according to a methodology that was approved by the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media a few days ago. It takes into account the quality of data transfer: page load time, access speed, the duration of a successful access session and the percentage of failed connections to Internet servers.

When calculating the average speed, the “zero” speed is taken into account in places along the route where there is no connection. This is the fundamental difference between this test and the numbers that SpeedTest issues.

The table in small print shows the average and maximum access speeds in 15 cities of the Russian Federation among the Big Three operators.

Interestingly, despite the almost equal number of Megafon base stations, for some reason, it surpasses the MTS in access speed in almost all cities. Probably, this is also associated with a smaller audience of MegaFon.

It should be borne in mind that due to the collapse of the ruble exchange rate, the number of input base stations is likely to decrease. The fact is that under the terms of the LTE license, operators are obliged to invest in the development of networks at least 15 billion rubles a year. But equipment in ruble prices has already begun to go up. So the forecast for LTE speed for the future is disappointing.
