New construction technology: house-skeletons

A group of graduates from the Barlet School of Architecture in London proposed an original method of making concrete structures. According to Wired magazine , having received the task “to come up with a project resembling manual work in the age of computer design,” they came to abandon the classic formwork into which concrete is poured, and used the fabric stretched on wooden struts to shape the structures. The resulting twisted constructions are easily confused with dinosaur skeletons.

Kazushi Miamoto, one of the participants in the creative team, says: “By changing the size and density of the internal supports of the structure, we control the flexibility of the resulting parts. No more need to build formwork. Internal supports stretch the fabric and create space for pouring concrete, and then serve as reinforcements for the structure. ” The construction technique comes out very cheap - all that is needed is that the wooden struts, fabric, concrete, and coating for the fabric, in which students used PVA glue.

In classical construction, it is required to build a form for the future construction of rigid materials (wood, metal), and cover it with a composition that prevents adhesion of concrete. The use of reusable forms speeds up and reduces the cost of construction, but prevents the imagination of architects from being able to roam.

Looking at the creations of students, you immediately recall the Temple of the Holy Family , which differs in its original forms from all other buildings. However, precisely because of the extraordinary complexity of the construction, this temple has been built since 1882 and the completion of construction is expected no earlier than in 10 years. All molds for casting have to be made individually and then process the resulting structure manually.

The idea of the students resembles another proposed in the 1960s by Dante Bini, an architect, and nicknamed Binishell (Bini shell ). In the construction technique proposed to them, concrete is poured onto inflatable structures, as a result of which round domes are obtained. And although his houses look futuristic, they have not gained popularity. It may be difficult to find furniture for them.
