According to The Washington Post , the Curiosity rover found traces of a dry lake in Gale Crater.

Scientists and NASA experts suggest that on the surface of Mars, perhaps in the past for a long time there were large lakes. It was previously believed that water on Mars was present only below the surface, or existed in liquid form for a relatively short period of time.

These findings are based on an analysis of rover data from the foot of Mount Sharp , located in the center of the crater. According to the new data, the mountain consists of several layers: both formed during the time the mountain is under water, and wind loads. In addition, it was hypothesized that the lake in the Gale crater dried out and filled with water again several times in a row.

Also, from the fact of the existence of liquid water on the surface, it follows that Mars previously had a much warmer and more dense atmosphere than it does now. There is no consensus about what happened to her and why she is so thin today - not yet.
