The story of Google and Yandex’s competition in the smartphone market has continued.
Another manufacturer , Fly,
refused to install the Yandex.Kit application set. Since 2015, Yandex software will not be preinstalled on Fly smartphones and tablets.
According to the Russian company, Fly went to these measures under the pressure of its partner - Google, which is trying to clean Android devices from extraneous software, installing instead a branded GMS kit (Google Mobile Services).
A similar policy of Google has already
become the subject of antitrust proceedings in the European Union , and Yandex has also testified against Google.
Recall that the main complaint of the anti-monopoly committee of the European Commission is the “all or nothing” policy in the delivery of a set of proprietary programs and software interfaces of Google Mobile Services (GMS) and their priority position relative to other software.

The GMS kit includes proprietary software from the Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail, Drive, YouTube, Hangouts, and Chrome. Google declares them as free software, but at the same time it requires money for the “activation” of the package from each manufacturer of Android devices. The amount of payment depends on the volume of production (about $ 0.75 per device). But the manufacturer can choose another scheme when he receives a portion of the profits from search queries from the device. It is with this scheme that Google forces them to stop using competing products on the device.
In addition, Google is gradually transferring more and more functionality from the open source Android Open Source Platform (AOSP) code base to a proprietary GMS.
Yandex company distributes an alternative catalog of applications and services Yandex.Kit, which directly competes with the GMS. But lately, Yandex has been experiencing major problems when trying to negotiate with Yandex about the pre-installation of Yandex.Kita.
There are suspicions that the problems of “Yandex” are caused by backstage actions of Google, which, under the terms of the contracts, forces manufacturers to refuse to install Yandex.Kita.
Using market power in the mobile operating system market, Google binds the Google Play application store to the GMS package, requiring that all the package be pre-installed and that additional restrictions be met, Yandex representative Asya Melkumova told the Vedomosti newspaper. She says that Yandex was previously difficult to negotiate with manufacturers of Android devices due to Google’s limitations, but now the relationship with them is under threat of total ban.
Recently, the third smartphone maker has refused to cooperate with Yandex. Recently a similar story happened with Explay and Prestigio.
Fly accounts for 12.5% of the Russian smartphone market (according to sales statistics from MTS stores). This is the second largest share after Samsung (18.1%).
