Google Inc. announced the beginning of work on children's versions of some of its software products, for example, Chrome and YouTube. Most likely, an adapted version of the search service itself will be presented. “Kids” means that services and software are adapted for children under 13 years of age. The release of "children's" Google services is scheduled for 2015, a more precise date is not called.
According to Google’s
vice president of development, Pavni Diwanji, the company decided to take this step because modern children are now starting to get acquainted with the Network from an early age, despite the fact that most services only allow users to start an account The user is already 13 years old.

At the same time, no age verification is performed (and it is hardly advisable to introduce such an inspection). That is why it was decided to launch software products adapted for children, which will allow the child to become not just a consumer, but also the creator of something (although it is not specified how this will be achieved). The Google search engine for children will produce customized results for the child, excluding “adult” results of dual queries. Pavni Divanji cited as an example her daughter’s attempts to find information about
Thomas the Tank Engine . The daughter entered the word train in the search engine, and eventually received a train schedule from the Amtrak service.
The initiative, of course, is interesting, but on the way to the implementation of such a project there are many obstacles, including human rights organizations for children and, most importantly, the Law on Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This law specifies what information about users who are less than 13 years old can be used, and what information these users can display. And since Google is actively collecting available information about its users, the company may have problems. For example, earlier this year,
a fine of 450 thousand dollars was
imposed on Yelp , precisely for violating COPPA.
