A new way to feel objects in virtual reality
New research has shown that with the help of ultrasound you can create a voluminous shape that can be felt and even seen. A study led by Dr. Ben Long can change the way you use 3D shapes.
The method uses ultrasound focused on the device. This ultrasound can be felt with your hand. Vegetable oil allows to see it. Tactile hologram allows you to feel the figure in free space, which can be used in virtual reality systems. The method can be used in medicine: surgeons will be able to feel such a patient’s illness as a tumor using tactile feedback.

The system generates a virtual 3D form that can be used in 3D displays to create a tactile object. The study showed that people are able to combine a picture of a 3D object with an object that the system “showed” to them.
