Nature magazine opens all articles for viewing.

The publishers of Nature, one of the oldest and most authoritative science journals in the world, have announced that, starting from 1869, all its copies will be available for reading through a special application for more than 6,000 universities around the world. Copy or print the article will be impossible.

Access to the articles will be carried out using a special platform ReadCube, which will allow viewing of PDF versions of articles, their annotation and the ability to share them with colleagues so that the article can be viewed through the browser. Also, the document can be saved to your collection in the cloud ReadCube - iTunes works similarly for media files.

The value of access to Nature journals can be understood from the words of the chief editor of the publishing house Philip Campbell: the cost of publishing an article in a journal, taking into account the involvement of experts for its review, ranges from 31,000 to 47,000 dollars, depending on the subject matter. Thus, open access to journals means access to the highest quality scientific knowledge. At the same time, Campbell hopes that both free access to the magazine and a paid subscription (individual or for libraries) will exist together.

In parallel with the opening of access to Nature journals, another discussion arose - the commercialization of access to scientific knowledge. Some university staff believed that Nature’s attempt actually seemed only to popularize its publishing house, while the ideal situation would be one in which anyone could have full access to the journal database, but the community could assume the costs as it happens in the area of crowdfunding.
