Smart valve LeakSmart helps to avoid a flood in the house

In anticipation of the coming cold winter, Lowe's, which owns a network of home improvement stores, added a new original device to its product line for home automation Iris. LeakSmart is a smart water valve that automatically shuts off water when a pipe breaks through.

The device itself was presented back in January of this year as part of the international consumer electronics exhibition CES, but it is only now that it has become possible to purchase it. In fact, it is an automated network-connected ball valve that is integrated into the domestic water supply and sewage system. LeakSmart can be controlled from anywhere on the planet, thanks to wireless access and a whole set of other sensors from the Iris series, with which the valve interacts. You can also configure triggers to automatically activate the device.

Suppose that the house is turned off heating. If the temperature drops below zero, the pipe will burst. The Iris humidity sensor will detect leakage and give a signal to the valve to shut off the water. This is the worst case. Ideally, the flood can be prevented by setting the Iris thermal sensor to turn off the water before the temperature drops to a critical minimum.

“Many of our customers have suffered serious losses from bays and floods due to burst pipes. A smart valve provides a new level of protection for the home and makes it possible to minimize damage, ”said Kevin Meeger, vice president and general manager of Smart Home at Lowe's.

The only difficulty may arise when installing the device. Unlike Water Hero (a similar device that is fitted to the main valve and shuts it off in case of leakage), to install Smart Valve you will need to call a plumber, at a minimum. But you can buy Smart Valve now for $ 160, while deliveries of the Water Hero will begin only next year.
